Osteopathy for Babies and Children

Gental Care for Babies and Children

Parents bring children to see us for the same broad reasons adults come in: something about how they are moving or holding themselves has raised a question, and they want it looked at by a qualified health professional.

Our osteopaths at Murrumbeena and Mount Waverley assess children with the same care as any patient, and treatment is adapted to their age and size. We work alongside your GP, paediatrician and maternal and child health nurse rather than in place of them, and we will refer you back to them where necessary.

Reasons Parents Bring Their Children Into Focus Osteopathy

Noticed a Positional Preference

Their baby consistently turns or holds their head one way, and they would like it assessed.

Growing Children With Aches

Older children reporting discomfort in the back, hips, knees or legs, particularly through growth spurts.

Sports and Activity Complaints

Active children and teenagers with strains, overuse niggles or discomfort related to training.

They Simply Want an Assessment

Something has caught their attention and they would rather have it looked at than wonder whether it’s best left alone.

What an Appointment Involves

The appointment starts with a conversation. Your osteopath asks about your child’s history, the pregnancy and birth where relevant, and what you have noticed. You stay with your child throughout.

Assessment involves observing how your child moves and gently examining the relevant areas. Techniques used with babies and young children are gentle and quite different to those used with adults, and your osteopath explains what they are doing as they go.

If your osteopath believes your child should be seen by a GP, paediatrician or another practitioner, they will tell you and explain why. Osteopathic treatment addresses musculoskeletal concerns, and there are many things it is not the right answer for. Our team will always guide you toward the best solution for your child’s concerns.

What to Know Before You Come In

Whether you book an appointment here at Focus Osteopathy or not, these four steps give most people a better starting point than waiting it out.

Of course, if you’re unsure what’s right for you – it’s always best to consult a medical professional, like a registered osteopath first.

Bring Your Child's Health Record

The blue book, plus details of any other practitioners involved in their care.

Come at a Time That Suits Them

A fed, reasonably rested baby makes for a more useful appointment than a hungry, overtired one.

Bring What You Need

Feeding, changing and settling during the appointment are all completely fine.

Ask Questions

If you are unsure whether osteopathy is the right avenue, ask before booking. For many parents, it’s a great solution. However, we would rather tell you it is not appropriate, than for you to waste your time and money.

Why Bring Your Child to Focus Osteopathy?

Here are some of the reasons people choose osteopathy for their baby or child.

Registered Practitioners

Your child is seen by a university trained osteopath registered with the Osteopathy Board of Australia through AHPRA.

We Work With Your Other Providers

Osteopathic care sits alongside your GP, paediatrician and maternal and child health nurse, not instead of them.

You Stay With Your Child

You remain present for the whole appointment, and everything is explained to you as it happens.

Gentle, Age Appropriate Techniques

The techniques used with infants and children differ substantially from adult treatment and are adapted to your child.

We don’t treat everyone

If we do not think osteopathy is the right approach for your child, we will say so and point you in the right direction.

A Practice the Local Community Has Used Since 2009

Families have been coming to Focus Osteopathy across two Melbourne clinics, in Mount Waverley and Murrumbeena for over fifteen years.
