Women's Health at Focus Osteopathy

Women's Health, at Every Stage

Women’s bodies go through many changes throughout the course of life, and musculoskeletal discomfort is a common side effect of those changes. Pregnancy, the months after birth, the demands of carrying and feeding a baby, and the changes that come with age all place different loads and stresses on the body.

Our osteopaths at the Focus Osteopathy Murrumbeena and Mount Waverley clinics assess and treat musculoskeletal discomfort at each of these stages, working alongside your GP, midwife or other practitioners rather than in place of them. This section brings together the services and information most relevant to women.

How We Support Women at Different Stages

Here’s how we support women through each of these stages.

During Pregnancy

Assessment and treatment for pelvic, lower back and rib discomfort, with technique and positioning adapted as your pregnancy progresses.

Preparing for Birth

Hypnobirthing classes covering breathing techniques, relaxation practices and labour preparation, with your birth partner included.

After Birth

Support for the neck, upper back and wrist, treating discomfort that comes with feeding, lifting and carrying, alongside guidance on positioning.

Staying Active Through Every Stage

Exercise rehabilitation, clinical pilates and hands on treatment for women wanting to maintain strength and mobility as they get older.

What We Treat, and What We Do Not

Our osteopaths work with musculoskeletal discomfort, meaning the joints, muscles and connective tissue. Through pre and post pregnancy that commonly includes treating the lower back, pelvis, hips, ribs, neck and upper back.

There are areas of women’s health that sit outside osteopathic scope, including pelvic floor assessment, continence, gynaecological conditions and hormonal health. These are best addressed by a GP, a pelvic health physiotherapist or a relevant specialist, and we will refer you where that is what your situation calls for.

Being clear about that boundary matters, because knowing which health professional to see for your unique situation is often the difference between making progress and not.

Talking About It Helps

Musculoskeletal discomfort during pregnancy, after birth and later in life is common, and it is frequently not raised because it may feel minor next to everything else going on. Bringing it up with your GP, midwife or osteopath can give you clarity, support and advice from people who see and work with these discomforts every single day.

Why Choose Focus Osteopathy?

Here are some of the reasons women choose Focus Osteopathy at different stages of life.

Care That Adapts to Your Stage

Technique, positioning and advice all change depending on where you are in your journey, whether that is late pregnancy, six months postnatal or venturing into menopause.

We Work Alongside Your Other Providers

Osteopathic care complements your GP, midwife or obstetrician, and we refer back to them where appropriate.

Honest About Our Scope

If what you need sits outside osteopathy, we will tell you and point you towards the appropriate healthcare professional for your unique situation.

Continuity Across Life Stages

Many patients see us through pregnancy, afterwards and for years beyond, which means your history carries with you, and can inform your future care.

University Trained and Nationally Registered

Osteopaths complete a five year university qualification and are registered with the Osteopathy Board of Australia through AHPRA, and no referral is required to book your appointment.

Time to Talk Things Through

Appointments are unhurried, which matters when the thing you came in for is not the easiest to raise. The team at Focus Osteopathy take our time to understand your concerns and assess your body thoroughly, so that we can work towards a more comfortable, strong and pain-free reality.
