Headaches are one of the most common medical complaints in our society. Headaches arising from the neck are the most common type of headache. Other possible causes may be sinus, eyestrain, stress, poor posture and jaw disorders. Infrequently some headaches arise due to serious pathology.
Osteopaths are trained to distinguish between headaches with common causes and those as a result of serious pathology.
Headaches arising from the neck are commonly accompanied with muscular tightness and joint restriction at the base of the skull and throughout the neck. Pain is often referred to around the eye and forehead. Often as a result of poor posture and stress these changes can result in irritation of the nerves and blood vessels thus causing pain into the head. Osteopaths can help reduce muscular tension, joint restriction and improve blood flow around the head and neck to alleviate the musculoskeletal cause of headaches. Postural advice, stretches and exercises are also provided by osteopaths to help prevent further headaches.
